K-W Classic - Race Report

Gorgeous morning for a road race (although not so nice for the S1/M1races later that afternoon) and a good showing for the S3/Jr field. The race consisted of 16 laps of the ~5km Hidden Valley circuit.
Racing started off rather tentatively with 4 men going down on just the second corner, but things settled down quickly and the pack held a steady tempo for the bulk of the first 10 laps. A few small breaks (mostly solo) tried to get away early on but nothing materialized. The peloton seemed less complacent than usual and was chasing down pretty much everything. Things picked up gradually over the final 6 laps. I tried several times to get away with about 4 laps to go, but was unable to get much of a gap so I settled back into my spot at the back of the bunch and waited for the bunch sprint.
I had pretty good legs on the final lap. I was about 20 wheels back as we came through the chicane. Made a move to the outside about half-way down the finishing straight but ended up taking wind a little too early - I surged briefly to the front but then faded over the last 100 metres and finished 9th overall, 5th in S3.
